How does the vacuum of air in a thermal flask stop convection from occuring?

it doesn't prevent convection, it prevents conduction. In order to conduct, heat needs a conductor. A vacuum doesn't conduct. The silvered surfaces of the flask prevent radiation of heat. Between the two, the contents stay warm for a long time.
