Why are women not allowed at brit milahs?

The mothers, aunts, sisters, etc., have been present at every single one I've ever been to. But, I confess, I've never attended an orthodox one. Perhaps they just have to hang out behind a screen like at orthodox synagogues. It's traditions, not commandments, that separates the genders at orthodox religious services, at least as far as my understanding of it goes.
